With an area of approximately 824.000 square kilometers, Namibia is more than triple the size of Great Britain. The north-to-south length of the country is 1500 km, while the east-to-west width is around 600 kilometres in the south and 1100 kilometres in the north.
As a harbour, Swakopmund became very important for the German colonial troupes in the beginning of the 20th century, at the doors of the Namib desert.
Swakopmund became rapidly the gate to South-West Africa and the entire supply for the German colony was delivered through this little town.
A train to Windhoek (the capital of Namibia) even started to operate in 1902.
Today, 30 000 inhabitants are present in the town. Swakopmund is a popular seaside resort with a slightly nostalgic atmosphere characterised by numerous German colonial style buildings.
Width of the streets is absolutely unbelievable, and are wider than in many capitals or even highways, with electric poles standing just in the middle!
