Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate. In summer (December to April) it is usually warm with day temperatures between 25 and 32 C-degrees. Winters are wet and cool, but temperatures don't often go below 10 degrees Celsius.

Cape Peninsula - the coast

Cape Town is on the 34th latitude south, which makes its climate comparable respectively to Casablanca and Los Angeles.

However it is a lot cooler in Cape Town, because of the Atlantic Ocean west of the city. On the eastern side of the city, it is much warmer though, where you can notice the influence of the Indian Ocean. Further east, the water becomes sub tropically warm north of Cape Agulhas.

Wind often blows strongly on the coast, but it is still possible to enjoy nice white sand beaches on the Atlantic side (mostly located in Camps Bay, Clifton, Hout Bay and Noordhoek). Milnerton, Table View and Bloubergstrand also have wide and long sandy beaches. Attractive beaches on the Indian side are in Simon's Town, Fish Hoek and Muizenberg.

Other nice beautiful beaches and warmer water can be found in Hermanus, De Hoop and Arniston on the Overberg coast.

Close to Hermanus, between July and November, dozens of whales come for breeding. Females and calves can then be easily found in the bay. They come usually within a few metres of the cliffs and can be watched at close range from the coast.

Due to strong winds, the beaches around Cape Town have also usually strong surf, perfect for surfers and body boarders.

The Cape area is generally acknowledged as shark-safe.
