The name "boulders beach" comes from a cluster of large granite boulders breaking the coastline and providing numerous sheltered inlets and reefs.
Boulders Beach, South Africa, is known for hosting a colony of about 3000 African (jackass) penguins.
The jackass penguin got its name from the donkey-like sound it makes.
Although set in the middle of a residential area, it is one of the only sites where this bird can be observed at close range, living freely in a protected natural environment.
In Foxy Beach, boardwalks were newly constructed to take the visitor within a few metres of the penguins.
The colony at Boulders Beach is unique in that it was started by the penguins themselves which voluntarily inhabited the suburb and the public bathing space. They have increased then from a few individuals to a colony of few thousands penguins.
